Start with the room, not the swatch. A family room wants a softer pile and a thicker cushion, because people sit on that floor. A hallway takes concentrated traffic, so it wants a dense low pile that will not crush into a shiny lane. Stairs bring their own problems: pile direction, edges, and fastening at every nose. Basements sit on a slab, so we check for damp before we choose anything at all.
Carpet is most of what we do. Broadloom, patterned goods, wool, stair runners, repairs and stretching. When the next room calls for a hard surface, we lay hardwood, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and waterproof flooring, then make the two floors meet cleanly at the door.
Your finished floor rests on three things you never look at: the subfloor, the tack strip and the cushion. We lift the old floor first, then hunt for squeaks, high spots and moisture. Loose boards get screwed down. Dips get filled with self-leveller. New tack strip goes around the perimeter, the pad is cut and stapled, and the carpet is power-stretched onto the pins.
Seams matter as much as the carpet. We place them away from your main walking path and with the light, then join them with a seam iron and seam tape. On patterned carpet we order extra for the repeat so the match holds across the room. If your carpet is loose or damaged in one spot, compare carpet repair with carpet stretching before you replace a whole room.
